Objectives:

  • Identify purpose and scope of PBSD
  • Assess state-of-the-practice
  • Assess state-of-the-knowledge in research
  • Explore approaches and perspectives of various countries
  • Identify relevant performance targets
  • Establish priorities for research and implementation

Global Theme:

Much of the past research in performance-based earthquake engineering has focused on rigorous approaches to performance assessment, and the metrics for communicating performance (in probabilistic terms) to stakeholders. In the design process (design of new structures and upgrading of existing ones), the challenge is to create a system that will deliver desired performance in a cost-effective way. It is the objective of this International Workshop to assess the state of knowledge and practice related to this challenge, so that progress in research and in the implementation in engineering practice can be accelerated and a common foundation can be established on which to base the various approaches advocated in different countries.
